Make no mistake, Abbott is champing on the bit and wants a fair dinkum war on ISIS but he needs Obama to move first! Unfortunately Obama has no intention of moving anywhere and his 61 member coalition of the unwilling is running the other way faster than the Iraqis.
While Sarah Hansen-Young has joined with uni academics to complain that we lack compassion toward ISIS recruits, a Gold Coast man, Reece Harding, has died with his boots on, fighting with the only people who can help to rid the world of this Islamic cancer, but no-one else wants to help them.
Australia has joined the US in wasting more billions trying to train and arm the Iraqis, just as they did so disastrously with the Taliban. Iraqi arms invariably finish up in the hands of the ISIS while the Iraqis run for their lives as they did during the Kuwaiti war as members of Saddam Hussein’s retreating Republican Guard.
So why do the Iraqis refuse to fight and why are the unassisted Kurds so successful?
Well, the Kurds are fighting for a homeland while the Iraqis wait to see who’s winning before committing, and that’s the way it’s always been with Arab tribal wars. Every lasting and meaningful war involves land, and those dispossessed of it usually win in the end.
You can rape their wives and kill their kids but you can never take their land… real wars are about territory and borders but Islam has no borders.
Territory to them is merely a tactical space from which to further advance a vile ethos.
Radical Islam is a belief system without perimeters, it is at home in Syria, Iran Libya, Tunisia and Turkey as it is in Paris and right now in Egypt… and here. It is at home everywhere. Fighting Islam is like fighting smoke and to win that war you must ignore the smoke and locate the fire.
The Kurds, with their under-equipped Peshmerga fighters, have been the only force to regain critical Iraqi towns and areas overrun by ISIS and they are currently fighting to regain the prized city of Mosul. But the West is refusing to assist the only proxy boots on the ground in Iraq?
The Kurds have enemies on all sides… Iraq’s Sunnis, Iran’s Shias and the treacherous Turks, yet still they fight on as the only effective force combating ISIS.
Obama’s “hands-off” policy has left Iran to fill the vacuum, Teheran has sent equipment to its old enemy, the Peshmerga, ignoring its terrorist arm, the PKK, while the US snuggles up to Turkey, a NATO member and stoic supporter of the ISIS.
Abbott may well ask the ABC, “whose side are you on?” He should ask the same question of Obama and Turkey’s Erdogan. Because Erdogan is supplying safe houses for the ISIS, allowing it free passage throughout Turkish territory, it is buying ISIS stolen oil at discounted rates while refusing the US landing rights on Turkish soil from which it could efficiently attack the ISIS.
Australia is supplying mid-air refuelling tankers for hamstrung US strike fighters that need to originate from the Gulf rather than Turkey before returning, bombs intact, through lack of targets.
Obama has alienated the West’s only real ally in Israel and is about to allow an emboldened Iran a nuclear capacity while Putin continues to supply arms to Syria in a war that can have no end under the foreign policy of a bankrupt US Administration.
The West can win this war but only if it first takes the time to understand exactly what it is they are fighting.
How is it that a deceased 23 year-old Reece Harding from the Gold Coast knew what was needed to defeat the ISIS but the US has no idea? How is it that demented dolts like SH-Y and insulated academic morons want to embrace dangerous converts to radical Islam and provide them with counselling?
Has the world gone mad or have academics burnt their history books?
