Every few weeks we take a ute-load of sheep to the abattoir. And every time we have trouble unloading them.

Damaras are smart sheep. They look down the ramp, sniff the air, listen to the cacophony of complaining animals and decide: “There is no way we are going in there.” So they form a “circle of safety”. They press into a tight circle with their heads together, presenting a barrier of bums as impregnable as a wall of Roman shields.

Pull one sheep out, shove it down the ramp and try to grab another – the first one is already back in the circle.

So I asked my sheep-canny neighbour, Fred McNally, how to unload smart sheep.

Easy, he said: “Just train a Judas goat to walk down the ramp, along the race, and into the holding yard. The sheep will follow him. Bring the goat back and take him home for the next load of sheep.”

“Never heard of Judas goats.”

“Course you have” said Fred. “Judas goats are leading our great primary industries to destruction.

“Look at Ag Force – supposed to represent Aussie farmers and graziers. Their pastures and animals are all part of the carbon cycle of life, but they cannot see that all grazing animals are carbon neutral. And they are nice guys to those making war on carbon and do not fight green bans which protect woody weeds that are invading natural grasslands and open forests. They hope that their craven co-operation will yield them special treatment – a comfy seat on some government board or a nice little soil-carbon subsidy somewhere.

“And the NSW Farmers, who used to have carbon sense, have now discovered the climate religion and now ‘support the transition from fossil fuels like coal and gas towards more renewable energy sources .’

“Have they forgotten all the diesel, petrol, oils and fertiliser they use? Or have they invented wind-powered tractors?

“And, what about the Judas goats leading most big coal companies and their workers? They have plenty of educated people who understand carbon chemistry and physics, but most industry and union policies are green-endorsed garbage. They even rob shareholders with attempts to bury the gas of life in carbon cemeteries, a strategy which will just waste money and coal, have no effect on global temperatures, and is even too stupid for most Greens.

“I’ll bet none of these industry big-wigs have hard-work hands.

“It’s time the Judas goats leading our industries were put out to pasture.”

Yes Viv, farmers organisations have reached a point where funding is provided by Gov from levies or for doing government activities, the list is growing every day and they are assigned unsuspecting farmers as their constituency, to promote and enforce government policy. This is how administrative law works and avoids the Australian Constitution, common law etc. We see the examples now in Livestock Production Assurance LPA etc where stock cannot be sold without compliance with government desires via third party contracts never agreed to be the farmers, but agreed by farmer compliance in the first instance. It is the death… Read more »

There is a new propaganda tool for the alarmists, Apparent Temperature. So if it’s 9 degrees and a cold wind it might feel like 0, if it’s 40 and a screaming northerly it might feel like 50. We’ve seen it in action in the Age this week where the Mid-East had a usual summer temp of 46 and an unusually high RH of 34% which everyone knows makes you feel hot and clammy. Ok, the Age is now trumpeting that this gave an apparent temperature of 64 or 74 degrees (they can’t decide) and have been headlining that alarming temperature.… Read more »

Two Muslims in a Toyota Tarago have driven off a cliff in Sydney, both are dead.
Officers at the scene said it was an appalling tragedy as the vehicle was capable of seating seven.

Yes, Abbott did some modifications to the Gillard RET but politically it couldn’t be abolished outright. A pity because it does us great harm. Off to cut wood now, I’ve burned a tremendous amount this winter to keep away the imaginary cold. All that snow, blizzard like conditions, but it was really balmy and warm. Because some climate “expert” says it was.

So Billy, you are saying there is more ice simply because there is more fresh water which freezes easier, how did the fresh water get there, from melting ice, WTF

Sea levels rise and fall depending on a number of factors. The fact that you live without heating is sad (poverty’s a bitch) but the rest of us have frozen through the coldest winter for twenty years. Look at the real world. For every anecdote you have, I can find two contrary ones. Believe what you want, it makes no difference to me, just don’t try to foist carbon taxes and high cost, inefficient “green’ energy onto the productive economy that feeds you.

Have a look at the tidal gauge records for Freemantle on Jo Nova. Some years it rises, some years it falls. Very small rise over the last century.

Unfounded alarmism.

The sea level rise will be sudden, and catastrophic. Don’t wish for it.

Yes this has been the coldest winter for twenty years. Just saw it in reality AND confirmed by BOM. Doesn’t suit the propagandists does it. Our inner city environmentalists don’t let the real world bother them. Just close the curtains and turn the fossil fuel heating up.

This has been the hottest July world wide since record keeping began. Just saw it on the SBS news.

The Russian captain knew there was trouble coming but the fools were out on four wheelers and Zodiacs and wouldn’t come back. The ship was on charter. Not an icebreaker but an ice strengthened hull. Read up on the account given by the captain. I am not doing your research for you. Typically selfish and ignorant environmentalists.

I will take climate change seriously when oil based fuels are quarantined for the exclusive use of growing and transporting food and running essential public transport. No more gratuitous air and road travel. No car, bike and boat racing. No interstate and world travel for bored holiday makers. Going to happen? Won’t hold my breath!

I loved the Guardian sponsored Ship of Fools full of environmentalists who went to Antarctica to document global warming. Their idea of science was zooming around in Zodiacs and on four wheelers. Because they wouldn’t listen to the captain and return to the ship they ended up stuck in the ice. The genuine scientific programs of three nations were disrupted because of the rescue. The environmentalists of course were so full of themselves they didn’t even realise the damage they had done or offer to pay for the extremely expensive rescue operation.

In the wet forests like the southern Otways the fuel loads are high but they are only considered a high fire risk in drought years when they dry out. This question was actually discussed by operational planners. Of course it is possible for an extreme fire to dry the vegetation ahead of it. One should never be too dogmatic about fires because they have a way of biting you on the bum.

February 6 1851 was the warmest day ever recorded in Victoria with a temperature of over 47C. You will not find mention of it in BOM records because it has been “moderated” out. A fire burned from Mt Gambier to Geelong. It was so intense it set fire to the sails of a ship in Bass Strait. We have always had extreme weather events.

Scientists are not a unified group. I simply don’t trust those who are obviously manipulating data to push their own view. All scientists believe the earth is warming. Only a few Greens believe in a stable climate. The earth is either warming or cooling. But this is only long term trend warming. All the models predicting catastrophic warming have been proved wrong. Now if the earth starts to cool, then we’ll be in trouble.

twentytwenty

stringybark, you don’t think scientists already know that, and have taken it into account? Don’t you trust science?

Funny how people listen to a small group of “heretics” and ignore tens of thousands of mainstream scientists, plus a massive body of evidence.
The heretics have a significant axe to grind because they are getting paid by coal suppliers to say what they say.

Sadly one of the most sensible meteorologists in the Melbourne BOM has retired. A man who was honest about the uncertainties of weather prediction and willing to let us know their weather prediction models often didn’t agree with each other. He actually said Melbourne had a heat island effect on temperature readings. Both in the fire service and on the land I have learned how difficult it is to predict weather even 12 hours hence. People who want to base policy on climate model projections for distant years are either fools or smart operators who treat the public as fools.

Alarming isn’t it. And it’s designed to be. What is this wonderful notion of global temperatures? Pick a different set of criteria, a different collection of stations, moderate and average by a different method and you can have the opposite conclusion. Reality: Victoria has had the coldest winter for twenty years.

Another great post, Viv. Keep them coming. And may I ask the warmists: Are you saying that if we did not introduce fossil fuels and coal powered energy into Australia, there’d be no bushfires and no drought with perfect grazing climate all year round?

stringybark

Bushfires will happen anytime the conditions of fuel are right. An escarpment fire with banksia and a dry wind behind it is always feasible, just difficult to ignite. At this time of year fires burn themselves out and are only a risk when people have built houses right in the middle of the bush. Every district has its own unique bushfire behaviour. Sydney has a wonderful combination of overgrown bush, homeowners with no fire sense and world class firebugs.

@stringybark : I don’t understand how people continue to ignore such evidence. Then if they do look at it, they say that recording methods weren’t as accurate back then, blah blah blah.

The only good thing about the cold winter is that it has caused the warmists to shut up. Although I read in The Guardian that the world is on fire and in the Age it was 74C in the Mid East. Except on reading the article it was 46 but some guy said it felt like 74. On a par with the Age article on the pensioner whose rooftop solar allowed him to watch TV during a blackout when the rest of the suburb was in darkness. The city media always ignored country bushfires. I’ve been at 10,000 acre burns… Read more »

Because there are equally large numbers of anecdotes showing we’ve been here before, that climate is not stable, that we are always having wetter/drier/hottest/coldest events in a very short record. Examples I know: bushfires are not coming earlier, nor are they getting worse. The weather conditions on Ash Wednesday in 1982 were worse than Black Saturday in 2009. I fought in both fires. I am told 1939 was worse again and as for 1851 we can only guess but it was the hottest day ever recorded in Victoria.

There are thousands of such pieces of anecdotal evidence from the people who grow our food and who study the flora and fauna, and all of it ignored by the likes of Monckton, Plimer, Forbes et al.
What is wrong with these men, why have they shut their eyes, ears and minds, and why are they sounding shriller and shriller every day?

A good story and very apt Viv. During WW2 the Jews experienced similar Judas Goats. Many Jews were led to slaughter by their own Judas Goats who workd with the Nazis hoping that their craven coperation would yield them some form of reward, but alas, we all know the answer to that, don’t we. Our traditions, values and way of life is under attack from all sides, we are at war right now, but our dopey blind citizens do not realise it. We are like the frog in the pot slowly boiling, he will not realise it until it is… Read more »

Over forty years I’ve seen our farming and political organizations lead rural Australia in a downward spiral that has more than halved the people on the land and given us poverty incomes. But we’ve had lots of high profile leaders who’ve climbed on our backs into fine self serving political careers. The new generation don’t know what a prosperous countryside used to look like.

George Orwell said, “There are some ideas so absurd that only an intellectual could believe them.”
