This is not an ordinary article. It is more of a request for help from our regular commenters. The new platform has lots of great features but is slightly different than the old one. I know it isn’t easy to teach an old dog new tricks, but we can at least try to lay things out for you. Unfortunately, I have limited knowledge of the comments system and Brendan simply doesn’t have time.

Still, we understand that many of you are missing some of the features of the old site. However, I suspect that many of those features are still there – if you know where to look.

Therefore, I wanted to ask those of you who don’t understand the thing to ask questions and those with the knowledge to provide answers. If we can, we would then like to collate these questions and answers into a short manual which we could make available on the site somewhere.

Please don’t leave off topic comments on this article. Let’s keep it clean for the subject in hand. I have deliberately put a new article up just after this one for that reason.

If anyone wants to collate all this stuff onto a Word document and post it to us at info@pickeringpost.com it would be greatly appreciated

I will start it off with a couple of helpful explanations I have come across in the comments section already.

This one

Hi Brendan, time for a little “User Manual” for the site. I love what you have done to dramatically improve the site but many regulars appear not to realise that taping on the little person with flower icon box left of the “you are logged on as…. brings up pages and pages of their comments, and if they select a comment by touching it, they are taken to their comment where they can see who has responded to their post. Once they have read and responded, they can go back to their comments via the return arrow. It is a fantastic mechanism and it is brilliant to use – for those in the know!

….and this one

You ask how to easily find your comments. So….
Use the “jump to comments” action under the join the conversation – right hand side of screen in blue type.
Immediately above the join the conversation box is a little black bust of a person with a flower.
Click on that and it will bring up all your past comments. Pages of them. They are easy to go through as it displays the first line of each comment and which article it relates to.
Pick the one you want to check and see who has commented via the small down arrow on the right hand side.
This app can be used as often as you desire. Very handy. I credit this entire system with assisting in making the system more user friendly and civil.
Cheers. Hope this helps.

Anyway I have worked out the easiest way to find a response that is on the same page as the one you’just viewed is to click the back button after viewing said comment from R/H side column and repeating that process, much easier than it sounds because the back button always brings you back to the same spot on your comment column

UK Government calls Act of Free Choice ‘utterly flawed’ during historic parliamentary debate May 12, 2019 in News The UK Parliament held a comprehensive hour-long debate into West Papuan human rights on Wednesday. Members of Parliament (MPs) from numerous political parties in the UK noted the historic violation of West Papua’s right to self-determination, raised concern over system human rights abuses by Indonesian security services, and called for the UK government to review its position on West Papua. Tabled by Robert Courts, Conservative MP, the UK Parliament heard how the 1969 Act of Free Choice ‘was not a free consultation’… Read more »

The world is overlooking the danger of the current West Papuan resolve for independence from Indonesia. The West Papuan Freedom Movement has now successfully lodged a request with the United Nations to revisit the flawed 1969 plebiscite. This could bring Australia and Indonesia again into conflict! Read the new book release “Rockefeller and the Demise of Ibu Pertiwi” eBook and print on demand all online platforms.

I enjoy reading this site, reading some of the crap from the far right, the racists and the bigots. It keeps one in touch with the nutters in our society.

I got a ribbon/rosette, because I donated, I don’t want the fucking ribbon. To me, the ribbon, is an indication that I support the views expressed in the articles. Well I don’t support those views. So when my ribbon is gone, I will donate again. Larry always said that the ribbon is optional. So get real Admin, if you want my support, remove the tag.

Aha – same for deletions as the old system. If you delete, you leave orphans whether they are first replies or sub replies to replies (if that makes sense)

Thanks to those new orphans who helped me to test this.

Mine is about when I paste something on to the ‘join the discussion’ comments box, I cannot see the top of the article. Am I doing something wrong? However, I have found that once the whole comment is ready to post, I refresh the page and up comes the little scroll tag on the side of the box (my entire comment is still here) and I can then check out the whole posting. Is this what’s supposed to happen?

The comments notifications – so far as it goes, the system in place does work – but it is clunky. It also notifies ONLY of comments made directly to oneself. The old system not only told us “XYZ replied to your post…” but also that “XYZ also replied to a post…”. Of those two, by far the most useful notification was the second. This tended to direct us to the more general and interesting comments by other posters where the direct replies had a tendency to be personal. The current system does not notify at all of other replies in… Read more »

Great idea of a FAQ section on the sidebar, this would also help newcomers as well as us who need to be stepped through the system….. One point I have is that we can lose track of a Thread WE start, because there is no reminder of Secondary or subsequent comment threads that others are attaching to other peoples comments on the initial thread……This can give people the chance to alter the meaning of the thread without being able to be addressed, either way…It would be great to get a notification on the sidebar for ALL additions to a thread… Read more »

So what about the elephant in the room? This : Positives (+) 18 Negatives (-) 62 So you are opposed to the abolition of the system! Well you might not be too enamoured when I reveal what these figures represent. The great Aussie mantra ‘A Fair Go”. Harry, the Editor-in-Chief recently appealed to all of us, thus: “We know some of you don’t have much money and we don’t expect a lot. However, I think that the enjoyment we all get from the Pickering Post would warrant the price of “tea and a slice” once a week at the very… Read more »
